Hello Friends,

Happy 2014 and best wishes for the New Year!!

I thought I upload photos of my latest creation that I made over the Xmas holidays. I had few days off over Xmas hence I couldn't just relax and do nothing - instead I decided to draft the pattern for this simple outfit. I went with simple patternmaking technique as I wanted fabric pattern and colour to be the center of attention instead of pattern pieces etc.

I thought I celebrate the summer here in Australia through selected colours.Do you think I went bit overboard with the colour match? I think it is lovely, the only problem is I don't know where to wear it. Mardi Gras is coming up, I might just wear it then:)

This jacket is made from wonderful Japanese cotton that is so nice to wear and absolute dream to work with.
Friends, this week has been all about trousers pattern draft and fitting. OMG, I didn't realise that fitting can take so much time? How many fittings do you do? Do you create shell for each fitting? What is the most efficient way of doing it?
Please don't think that I will be wearing my pants on true waist. The pattern drafting method is based on true waist hence this shell goes all the way up there.

On another note, I did some shopping on Amazon.com. Thanks to Thin Man Sewing, I decided to buy the Zip Snip Electric Fabric Cutter. Good Stuff!!!. Plus few more books...

Do you buy or make your own patterns?

That was the question I've asked myself few years ago. My sewing journey started by the coincidence (so to speak). The catalyst for this hobby was a dress that I saw one day in the magazine for my sister. Btw, the dress was nothing over the top. The beauty of the dress was in its simplicity.

That day was a pivotal day. It is the day i embarked on my sewing journey. The simple dress managed to ignite the desire and curiosity in me; prompting me to learn the beauty and the intricacies of sewing and pattern making. I feel blessed for this random coincidence (if you would like to call it that way). I didn't know I had a creative side in me until this moment.

I remember buying my first pattern which was Simplicity pattern, and it was a skirt. Yes, my first project was the skirt. Now that I look back - what a remarkable and a steep learning curve! I worked on the skirt for days. I didn't even know how to switch on and/or thread the sewing machine. In a single line, An Extraordinary experience!!!

Luckily with my patience, perseverance and dedication, lots have changed since then. At least now I know how to turn on my girls (that is what I call my sewing machines and the Baby Lock, the overlocker, is the Queen of ' em all). I went on to do the private classes in pattern making - The Guarino method (aka An Italian) pattern making method, which guarantees perfect fit at all time. I find the Guarino pattern making method extremely useful and efficient way of creating bodice, pants or skirt pattern in a remarkably short time.

The Guarino Method of Pattern Making

1. Bodice. The key measurement for the bodice pattern is the chest size (that is right not the bust but chest size) The rest is a piece of cake -- it's just a matter of connecting the dots... Literally

2. Pants - the hips measurements are used for the trousers. Again. once you have that, the rest is a matter of connecting the dots.

For the purpose of this blog, I am using the pants pattern, which i have done on the weekend, as an example ... See below

New Pants Pattern ...Next Step, Fitting!!!!

The Tools of Trade

Depending what are you creating, the main set of tools are two triangles.

The process is really easy and effective, and it allows you to create the fitted bodice, designed just for your body!!!! Please note, this is a genuine article on the patternmaking method I like using and not a paid blog entry...I wish it was :)

If you are interested in finding out more about this rather unique yet effective pattern making method, feel free to go the website http://www.scuolacentromoda.com/. Mind you, it is in Italian, but thanks to Google Translate that shouldn't be an issue.

In summary, I know how to draft any pattern without any special triangles. Nevertheless I find this method extremely useful and tend to use it quite often.

Friends, what about you? Do you draft your own or buy the patterns? Would you like to learn to draft patterns? Let me know, I'd be interested to know your thoughts? What pattern method do you use?
I know it has been rather a long time since my last post and I have missed you all dearly. What has been happening since my last post? Well, to tell the truth, a lot. So much to report on and I don't know where to begin. As they say, if you are not sure where to begin, always start from the beginning.

Its about the time I update you on my MPB Day 2012 experience. Well, in a single word it was "AMAZING"..... Peter was an exceptional host and real pleasure to meet. I have visited FIT/Fashion District and had most amazing time meeting and mingling with other passionate sewers and blogger.

I am so pleased for the fact I have decided to attend the event. Apart from the shooting that took the place just around the corner(as in real CSI NY Scene) where we were at some stage during our Tour, the overall experience was AMAZING. Did I say AMAZING too many times? Oh well, it was just that...Amazing!!!

I am back in Australia from my US/Canada trip and ready to continue with my sewing adventures. The trip was amazing and some of the highlights were meeting Peter Lappin and other great Sewers/Blogger as part of the Male Pattern Baldness Day 2012 and in private (more on this in next post).

Today I just wanted to give you and update regarding my Tailored Jacket.

The Tailored Jacket Finished

The Tailored Jacket is ready and really light to wear. I think I will be able to wear it with number of things. The good thing is that fabric is not too light which allows for this jacket to be worn in Spring & Autumn and an occasional cooler Summer night. In all honesty, this jacket was finished on the 4th of August or morning when I was about to leave to US. Unfortunately due to the time constraints I didn't manage to report on update at the time.
This jacket traveled with me to US & Canada as I was looking to wear it for The MPB Day 2012 which didn't happen as the weather was humid and warm which made this jacket an obsolete item on my travels. Nevertheless, I was back yesterday and we currently have 20 degrees (C) in Sydney, which is perfect for me to wear the jacket.

This has been a rather busy and I can confidently say a very productive week. Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for not posting anything sooner but as you can appreciate my tailored jacket journey is rather a slow one and I don't feel I should bore you with posts that only have minor progress.

I am pleased to advise that I have conquered the lining and construction of the lining. Can I say, this was the hardest part of the jacket construction for me. Seriously, why does it have to be slippery....

Picture 1. I know it doesn't look like jacket in this photo. I was totally lost at this stage hence decided to take the picture...

Getting lost in the jacket/lining construction is sooo easy....in fact, I believe it is unbelievably easy to get confused and subsequently stop functioning for a moment...as stated earlier this was most challenging part for me..

Picture 2. Sleeve/Lining Section of the Sleeve

Attaching the lining to the inner sleeve is rather amusing experience as I was trying to achieve full instalation of the lining without any hand sewing which I can advise that I was able to do it successfully.

Picture 3. The Finish Line getting closer YEAY

It is truly nice feeling when you can see that you are almost at the end of the road and your jacket is coming along nicely.

And there we are my readers, as you can see I have managed to complete fair bit of work in addition to my busy week and life demands. The last step of my jacket constructions are buttons and I am anticipating to finish this before my US Trip tomorrow...(Cant promise though)

There will be a slight pause with my blog as I am off to US and Canada for a holiday. I will be attending the Male Pattern Baldness Day (MPB) Day which is on the 11th of August 2012. Here is the link for those that want to find out more...MPB Day 2012 - Peter Lappin

The Tailored Jacket journey is never ending one... This jacket is truly testing me in many different ways as I started losing sleep because of it (literally). I am tackling each challenge as it comes. I know you may think this is rather silly but this jacket is almost like spiritual awakening to me. I am getting to know myself more and more with each stage of the construction.
This is what I can update on so far.

The Collar

This stage of construction went well or relativistically well. As you can see this method of collar construction involves working with the fully finalised collar where you sandwich the collar in and stitch each side individually to upper/back and facing/upper collar. I have to admit it does require a lot of precision(provided you are after nice professional finish).
I am working with the Rayon Lining which is fairly difficult to work with as it frays fair bit plus it is slippery and unpredictable under the needle.

In summary this is where I am at with the jacket. Hope ayour sewing adventures are going well.
Have a great day and updates will follow soon.

Another day & another stitch on my tailored jacket. The most exciting part at this stage is that it has finally started looking like a jacket. The peak of my excitement is the fact this is my first jacket that I have drafted and attempting to sew hence you can imagine my anticipation. Learn as you go!!!.

This is also first project where I am practicing number of new skills such the double welt pocket(which you would have seen in my previous post), collar, sleeve button hole and lining.

Nevertheless it has been success so far...at least that is what I think hehe...Ok, let me update you on my progress so far..

Sleeve Buttonholes

The buttonholes stage of the construction was relatively easy task thanks to Bernina B380 as it has one button - buttonhole function which is precise and works like a dream everytime.... Highly recommend this sewing machine(especially for those readers that are looking to buy a sewing machine).

Sleeves - Joining Upper and Under Sleeve (Tailored two piece sleeve)

The next stage of construction process was to join the upper and under sleeve which was fairly straight forward. The only recommendations I can give with this stage of the process is to pay close attention to the undersleeve part of the inner arm seam as there is extra easy on the upper sleeve which needs to be carefully maneuvered when sewing the sleeve. Not sure if this is the case with the bought patterns but it certainly had some easy in my own made pattern. I guess it would have to be the same with the bought patterns as EASE is required to slightly bend/shape the sleeve.

Setting in the Sleeves

This has been a rather challenging part of the overall process due to the number of reasons but main reason for me was limited space to reach within the garment to finish the sleeve and at one stage of the process I honestly couldn't figure out what part of the garment I was looking at/working with. It was touch confusing and overwhelming. I am proud to report that I have officially survived the sleeve setting process .

In nutshell, it has been rather busy few days and I am pleased that I was able to complete Sleeve/Buttonholes and set in the sleeves. Now the next tasks of the project are the collar/facing/ facing double welt pocket/Lining and finishing Lining around back vent area. Should be fun... As per my previous posts, there is no rush as I really want to enjoy the overall process and fine tune my sewing construction skills on this jacket. Remember my motto ... "One Stitch at the time" .

This has been rather a busy week but I am glad to report that jacket is finally coming together. I was able to fix all my little errors with mitered corners and join the vertical seams that essentially make a jacket.

Finally Vertical seams joined...
Yesterday I went to Tessuti Fabric Store in Surry Hills and bought the lining. I bought lining in similiar colour to the fashion fabric. I did initially think of an orange colour lining as a contrast but couldnt find that nice burnt orange colour that is in Rayon hence had to settle with the current choice. I am confident it will look good.
And here is me testing my jacket shell....apologies for the night shot as I couldn't wait for tomorrow before sharing it with you...

Unfortunately construction doesn't end here as there are still sleeves, collar and lining to be completed...... nevertheless it is all one task at the time and I am confident we will get there. In a meantime and until my next post I am leaving with you with the photo of my orange pants I did earlier this year in Polysheen as a test garment and quite like it hence I have decided to wear it today(as weather was overcast and everything was gray). I know they are bit bright but we all need some colour in our life...don't we...
Jacket Journey continues....

The Lapels

The lapels have been set and now resting overnight in order to be shaped . There was fair bit of hand stitching involved and like anything else this was my first time attempt ever. Nonetheless it was fun.

Steamed Lapels left to rest for 1 day

Lapels were fun..obviously the most important part was to ensure that lapels have same width and stay tape is pulled equally into a seam allowance to ensure consistency.

Lapels resting in place overnight

Sleeve Vents

Ok, I didn't anticipate this step in my jacket construction workflow but it had to happen as I have drafted the sleeve pattern incorrectly without realising my mistake until today.

My main objective was to get away from mitered corners which(like everything else) I have never attempted before. Luckily today I've decided to join undersleeve to the top sleeve which made me realise that I had one fold too many for each vent arm/side. This obviously is not a look and it had to be fixed.

Lovely Mitered corner...

Naturally my sleeve patterns had to be updated. Not sure if I have mentioned before but I drafted my own jacket pattern as I don't use bought patterns.

Error fixed.. Sleeve patterns updated

The Collar

I have steamed the collar to ensure it has sufficient moisture so it can be shaped on my tailored ham.

And lastly, this is all I have at the moment to update on. There will be more information to come in next few days. I am truly enjoying construction of this jacket and truly looking forward to the end product. Every minute I have to remind myself to enjoy the journey and not to be focused solely on the end result.

I say "farewell" until next post with Welt pocket i have managed to complete...truly love this pocket...

bye bye !!!!

I am having a welt of a day today with the welt pockets(so to speak). Today was a first time I worked on the welt pockets and let me tell you it wasn't as easy as they make it look in the books. As they say, it is easier written than done....

As per the photo above, I have prepared the guideline made of the interfacing(fusible) which I have applied on the wrong side of the jacket. The picture below is just quick snapshot of the pattern for pocket flap and sides.

This is the final preparation of all flaps and the strips which are applied on top and bottom of the opening.

The next stage was to apply the interfacing strips to the wrong side and stitch around the guidelines.

The final result looks like this on the right side.....In all honesty, I am not sure I like the shape of the pocket flap. Considering this is first attempt at making jacket(tailored one too), I am happy how it turned out.

And this is what it looks like on the wrong side.....

The good news is that one of the pockets is done.. one more to go...that should take me entire day hehe.

As you can see I havent used pocket bag/surface to close the pocket as I need to find the applicable fabric that is matching the actual fabric. I may need to use the lining fabric( naturally in matching colour) and maybe interface one side of the pocket bag.

As per my previous blog entries, I am doing this jacket one stitch at the time and there is no rush. With the rate I am currently going I should be able to wear this jacket next year.

Cheers Mike !!!!americcihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12330979932280753875noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536280103656545830.post-10020512283735566762012-07-13T17:47:00.001+10:002012-07-16T17:09:27.542+10:00Tailored Jacket coming togetherDear Friends,

I am pleased to advise that my tailored jacket is coming together nicely. For some reason I am taking time with putting it together as I truly want to enjoy every stage of the jacket construction. I don't necessarily want to rush the overall process. In my opinion, the journey is more important then the actual destination or in this instance the final jacket.

As per my previous posts, this project is not something I can expect to finish in two days. The method to this project is slow and steady and I am taking one stitch at the time...

Take care and I will provide update in next few days...Did you do any sewing lately?

Today we will not discuss the tailored jacked I am currently working on but the street dump/bargain I was able to come across and collect. That is Janome Sewing Machine with all of the accessories/box including the instruction manual and warranty. Can you believe my luck? I am sooo grateful for this gift...Thank You Universe!!!!
I am pleased to advise that Janome is fully functional and the only thing that needs fixing is the bulb/light and it will be as brand new. I can already find use for this sewing machine - for example, when working on the denim or sequin fabric, I will use this sewing machine and not Bernina. This is truly Heavy Duty Sewing Horse(so to speak)....may I also add this is very very fast machine.........
What about you? Did you ever come across a Sewing Machine left on the side of the road? Was it fully functional with the lot?

Today I have managed to dedicate some of my precious time on sewing/jacket construction. To tell the truth I was aiming to finish more but had to go with Archie and Rob to visit our dog minder to see if Archi (our Boxer dog)will get along with another dog when we go overseas in August. That visit went well but my jacket pieces are still sitting on the table and waiting to be put together....I feel as if it is begging me to put it together...well I say slowly but steadily we will get there :)

Ok, so far I was able to sew the vents on sleeves or more like under sleeve piece(there is still upper Sleeve). The under collar has been joined to the upper collar and in my opinion it looks presentable...you can be the judge...

Here is slightly different angle of the same photo - as you can see I dont feel like I have achieved much today hence two photos of the same picture essentially.

Slightly closer look ....

Tomorrow I am aiming to finish/close the darts and set lapels that will need to be left "alone" to "rest" and set in place overnight...you see ...another reason why you can't rush the jacket..... it all happens in its own time ....

In the meantime, I will have to dedicate some of my time to Archie and his beautiful eyes..I better mention Rob in this blog so he doesn't feel left out...

Have a great day and loads of love from sunny Sydney..

Another day and another stitch on my tailored jacket. I am pleased to advise that jacket is coming along nicely and I have done fair bit of work on basting/interfacing and overall marking and preparation before I start sewing.

Truth to be told, you can't rush the jacket projects - I find if I do everyday little bit and stay focused then I am confident that project will result in really nice garment that I will love to wear.

For some reason I thought (when I started sewing) that jackets are really easy and not so much time consuming to make - well that is incorrect. I can tell you (from my own experience) that there are so many pieces in the jacket that you really need a list (pattern item list) to stay on top of it and ensure that all items have been cut out :D

As you can see from the photo above - I am armed with my Tailoring How to Book and ready to start putting together my first jacket :) sooo excited

The scene is set and I will dedicate 1 hour for sewing today. Updates to follow...

Have a great day and let me know if you are currently working on any jacket project/s and how it is all going?

Well....Today I am starting my second project with the desired outcome to have pair of jeans shorts. I found this irresistible fabric in Merrickville (where I tend to buy fabrics for smaller projects) for a very cheap price of $3 a meter (couldn't say no).

For all those readers in Sydney, Merrickville is pretty handy if you live in the city as it is fairly close to CBD plus it is much cheaper than major retailers such as Lincraft and Spotlight.
Needless to say, if I am buying loads of fabric then the destination is Cabramatta.

Most of us who have done some sewing are aware that sewing can be enjoyable if there is process/plan of action involved. Personally, I like structure when doing things therefore I tend to group the things when sewing anything as it is easier and it allows for any project to be broken down in sections/categories.

Today I want to talk about preparing the fabric for the project and importance of preparing the fabric.

Step 1.
Pre-wash the fabric - I use the normal cycle in the washing machine- taking into consideration the fabric I will be using is denim, I had to wash the fabric in order to get rid of any excess dye

Why?

The untreated fabric and the residue dye can leave marks on the sewing machine and it is not the easy thing to clean. Thankfully I have discovered Chucks Magic Eraser (can be purchased in Woolies - if you live in Australia) and it does the trick... Love my Bernina too much..what can I say. Did anyone else experience with the excess dye and new sewing machines (as they all tend to be white Lol)

Step 2

Once the fabric has been washed, we are required to dry the fabric - again, this is light denim cotton - it dried in no time as weather in Sydney was amazing today. Just lovely sunny day...

Step 3

I like my fabric to lie flat on the cutting board hence I like to give a quick press to smooth any wrinkle that can eventually affect the fitting of the garment ( as you can accidentally get one side of the pants longer/larger which can affect the design and desired silhouette)

Step 4

Prepare the fabric for cutting. This is fairly straight forward stage as it requires that fabric is positioned flat on the cutting table. In my instance the fabric layout needs the selvages to match to ensure correct grain of the fabric.

This is extremely important step as any mistake with the grain direction can cause issue in fitting.

Once selvages are equal, the inconsistency in cutting of the fabric is more obvious. Can you see the difference?

At this stage we are ready to start pinning the patterns and cut the fabric. This will be done in the next blog update. My fabric is nicely spread across the table and ready to be pinned:))))

This is how I prepare the fabric for cutting...any other ideas how else can be done?

Cheers and stay safe:)))
Dear All....Welcome to my Sewing/Fashion Patternmaking and anything creative blog.

This blog is used as a tool to share the knowledge and experience anything patternmaking/sewing related.
I have commenced my sewing journey aboout 18 month ago. This hobby came from nowhere and now I am in position where I cant spend a single day without doing any sewing. I trust I am not the only one (come out, come out wherever you are).
Therefore, welcome to SewQueen Blog ... Queen for the fact I can be a queen sometimes:) and I love sewing and creating the garments...

This is Pattern Draft created using Winifred Aldrich - 5th Edition - metric pattern cutting for menswear. This particular pattern is for an "easy fitting tee shirt block"

Modification to the instructions from the sleeve

I have reduced the width of the short sleeve by 2 cm as book is suggesting full width for easy fitting whereas I really I wanted slightly taped look on my sleeve yet comfortable.

Taking into consideration this is my first draft of an easy fit tees I will need to lengthen the draft by additional 5 cm as I find the final produce slightly shorter than desired...

see below the finished product (hope you like it)
